Tona Otoro

I build software to solve my problems and better people's lives.

My ongoing project, Parkeye, is a mobile app for simplifying campus parking at George Mason — a school with more than 30,000 commuter students.

Parkeye

A parking-availability forecasting model that predicts campus lot occupancy up to 4 hours ahead. Built an ETL pipeline from 5 years of historical data (25,700+ records across 14 George Mason lots), trained an XGBoost quantile regression model, and shipped it as a FastAPI microservice powering a React Native app — piloted with George Mason parking staff after incorporating 400+ student feedback responses.

Experience

  1. State Farm logo

Software Engineer Intern @ State Farm

    Jun 2026Present

Built a REST API endpoint with Spring Boot and JUnit to automate issuance timestamps for IBM IMS transactions, cutting manual setup time by ~88%. Deployed and validated changes across QA and dev on AWS ROSA using Bruno for endpoint testing.

  2. Parkeye logo

Founder & Software Engineer @ Parkeye

    Apr 2026Present

Founded a parking-availability forecasting startup: built an XGBoost quantile regression model (21 engineered features) predicting campus lot occupancy up to 4 hours ahead, backed by a PostgreSQL ETL pipeline and a FastAPI microservice serving a React Native app. Piloted with George Mason parking staff after incorporating 400+ student feedback responses.

  3. Transurban logo

    Junior Programmer Intern @ Transurban

    Jan 2026May 2026

Built a Python pipeline processing 4,000+ daily ETC transactions to automate statistical analysis of toll violations, and a Pandas-based alerting script that cut failure-detection latency by ~99% compared to manual health checks.

  4. George Mason University logo

Undergraduate Teaching Assistant @ George Mason University

    Jan 2026May 2026

Tutored a class of 40+ students, answered 200+ questions on the course Q&A page, and debugged student Java programs during office hours covering recursion, OOP, and data structures.
